Akademiskkvart
Usability improvements to existing website
Overview
I work with SSCO (the Stockholm student unions central organisation) as a UX designer for a project improving the service Akademiskkvart.se; a website for students to find affordable housing.
I am working in a project group where our goals are to develop Akademisskkvart for increased usability and security for all students in Stockholm, as well as making the website an accessible and appealing digital environment.
Below, I will update with designs and suggestions i make for the website as we work on the project!
News letter subscription notification
My first task was to change the websites news letter subscription “advertisement” of the page. The old version was a large chunk of the home screen and I was requested to come up with a smaller, sleeker version of the same concept. I came up with a couple of ideas and showed them to my team who decided which version to move forward with.
Old version:
V. 1 - Popup
I made a small popup meant to appear in the upper right corner of the website with a bell-button. Upon clicking, users would be redirected to their account settings with the notification setting toggled on if logged in. If not logged in, they would be redirected to the login/sign up page. I made mobile and web versions of the design.
V. 2 - Top bar banner
I made a thin announcement top bar, also with a bell-button. Upon clicking, users would be redirected to their account settings with the notification setting toggled on if logged in. If not logged in, they would be redirected to the login/sign up page. I made mobile and web versions of the design.
V. 3 - Simple button
Finally I made a design with a notification button added to the existing top bar of the web page. Upon clicking, users would be redirected to their account settings with the notification setting toggled on if logged in. If not logged in, they would be redirected to the login/sign up page. I made mobile and web versions of the design.
Results
After discussing with the team, we decided to move forward with the top announcement bar version of the design. Our developers implemented the change which is now live on the website:
